Sefia Van Aken[1], aka Sofia or Zofia Van Aaken[2]
Birth
Sofia or Sefia Van Aaken was baptized on 18 November 1716, recorded as the child of Pieter Van Aaken and Rusjen Dame. at Ulster, New York; or possibly at Minisink, in Orange, New York or Sussex, New Jersey. Sephia may have been baptized 18 November 1716, by a traveling Dominie at a local meeting house in the Minisink valley in either Orange, NY or Sussex, NJ. Her baptism was recorded at the Reformed Dutch Church of Kingston, New York.[3] Sefia's baptism in the Kingston church does not necessarily mean she was born there, as some baptisms and marriages in this period were performed in the Minisink area by traveling Dominies. However, her marriage record indicates that she was born at Kingston.
Marriage
Sefia Van Aaken of Kingston married Jacobus Westvaal (1713-abt.1800) of Minisink, on May 7, 1738. The marriage was recorded at the Kingston Reformed Dutch Church, and the record indicates that they married "in the church."[4] It is most likely that after marriage the couple resided in the Minisink area, where Jacobus was already living.
Sefia's first child, Christina, was baptised 7 months after Sefia's recorded marriage. Was she sent to Kingston due to her family way? Her child was baptized on December 10, 1738. Baptism was recorded at the Kingston Reformed Dutch Church[5]; however the sponsors for the baptism were living in Minisink on 1 Nov 1738 when Apalonia Kortregt gave birth to her own child. This fact suggest that Christina's baptism, 39 days later, was conducted at Minisink rather than in Ulster County, NY.
Note: Jacob Westvaal may have also married: Jannetje Decker, about 1751, at Deerpark, Minisink, Orange, NY.[6]. Nothing has been found yet to prove or disprove this.

Research Notes
LNAB
Van Aaken is the surname recorded for Sefia's father at her baptism. Capitalization of the preposition "van" is incorrect and has been corrected per project naming conventions. Quackenbush-118 15:14, 17 January 2017 (EST)
The surname for Sofia would be more accurately "Van Aaken". This would be in keeping with her baptism, marriage and the Surname of her ancestors. Quick-803 16:16, 12 February 2014 (EST)
